“To make a perfume, take some rose water and wash your hands in it, then take a lavender flower and rub it with your palms, and you will achieve the desired effect”
Leonardo da Vinci
(1452 – 1519)
In the height of summer the first sign that you are drawing close to a field of Lavender is often the sound. The contented hum of thousands upon thousands of worker bees gathering the heady nectar and sweet pollen to make honey and nurture their sisters.
Lavender has been used by people for centuries. Over 2500 years ago Lavender was important to the ancient Egyptians in mummification. Ancient Romans used it for cooking and bathing then in medieval France Lavender was used for washing clothes and linen.
There’s more to Lavender than a beautiful scent and rich colour. During the Great Plague of London it served as a medicine while in France it was said glove makers using Lavender to perfume their products did not catch cholera.
Today this natural blue purple herb is used in aromatherapy to soothe headaches and motion sickness, to aid relaxation and sleep and even as an antiseptic and inflammatory infusion for cuts, insect bites and sun burn.
